Professor Hu earned her Ph.D. in Mass Communications at Penn State University, her master’s degree in Communication at Chinese University of Hong Kong, and her bachelor’s degree in Journalism at Renmin University of China.
Since joining TCNJ in 2007, Dr. Hu has continued to advance her research and publication program in three areas of scholarship that she pursues: a) e-health (new media and health communication); communication technology’s impact in interpersonal and social contexts; and communication technology and pedagogy. Dr. Hu’s most recent work focuses on the roles and effects of new media and emerging technologies in health communication. In detail, Dr. Hu has developed a three-pronged research agenda in this interdisciplinary area: 1) consumer health informatics, 2) doctor-patient relationship in the Internet age, and 3) online social support.
In addition to a book chapter and an encyclopedia entry, Dr. Hu has published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Electronic Journal of Communication, Atlantic Journal of Communication, and Open Communication Journal. Dr. Hu constantly presents papers at annual meetings of national and international associations, such as the National Communication Association, the International Communication Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the American Public Health Association.
Professor Hu teaches Introduction to Communication Theory and New Media and Health Communication. Hu is especially interested in pedagogical innovations. In particular, she has incorporated Second Life, a 3D virtual world, into her classes (Using Second Life, Hu Opens Up a New World of Communication to her Students). Hu has been invited to give in-person and virtual lectures about her teaching innovations at several workshops on and off campus.
Dr. Hu serves on the Editorial Board of Atlantic Journal of Communication. She has reviewed numerous papers for conferences as well as manuscripts for journals such as Atlantic Journal of Communication, Chinese Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Family Communication, Journal of Health Communication, and Rocky Mountain Communication Review.
